Minimum wall thickness: 1mm (may vary depending on part dimension)
To ensure that your model is 3D printable, we would recommend a minimum wall thickness of 1mm. However, we recommend that you increase the wall thickness of your model as your design gets larger in scale. Designing your models too thin may result in your 3D printed part being too fragile for handling, prone to warping and may break easily.
Sufficient wall thickness is crucial to ensure that your models make it through printing and post processing.
Embossed & Engraved Details
For embossed details, we recommend a minimum thickness of 0.5mm and a height of 0.5mm for your text.
For engraved details, we recommend a minimum thickness of 0.5mm and a minimum depth of 0.5mm.
Clearance is the space between two objects, allowing one or both of them to have a certain degree of freedom of movement relative to the other. We would recommend 0.1mm for tight fit, 0.2mm for standard fit and 0.3mm for loose fit. You are advise to test out several iterations if you wish to attain a perfect fit.
As much as possible we would recommend to hollow out solid models. Majority of the time, producing your 3D printed part in full solid may not be necessary. By doing so, you can reduce cost and avoid shrinkage issues in thicker regions. Recommended wall thickness 2-3mm (for model below 35cm). 4-5mm wall thickness is recommended for model between 35cm to 70cm)
Even after hollowing your model there will still be 3D printing material trapped in the interior. To avoid this, you can design “escape holes” to your model so that the excess material can be drained. Escape holes are recommended to be at least 4mm in diameter and beyond 8mm for large model. For large model, adding a single escape hole will not allow the excess material to be drained fully. Hence we recommend multiple escape holes to be added.
Large Flat Plane
Designing large flat planes will cause will model to deform or warp. To avoid this, we would advice to avoid designing models with large flat planes.
Often when designing your model, it is a good practice to include ribs and gussets to improve the strength and stiffness of your model.
Multiple Part File
Multiple part in a file is a common reason for us to reject an order or cause delay for us to process your order. When you need more than one model to be printed, simply export the separate models individually and send it in to us for printing or quoting.
Design for Transparency
When designing your transparent model, do ensure that both internal and external walls are expose and easily reach to attain a higher transparency for your printed part.
Clear varnish have to be applied internally and externally for your models to attain a good transparency. If either side of the wall cannot be reached by spray painting, it will affect the transparency of your model.
*Please take note that having very thick walls could also reduce the transparency in your model!
